This is a wonderful adjunctive treatment modality which is non-invasive, relaxing, and helps alleviate many conditions that are not 100% resolved with traditional medicine alone. Veterinary Acupuncture can be used as the sole treatment or in combination with western therapies in the treatment of many diseases. An increasing number of western studies are beginning to confirm what the Chinese have known for centuries: that this medicine works.
Some of the most common and effective uses of vet acupuncture are for respiratory disease such as asthma, gastrointestinal disorders including diarrhea and constipation, pain (including arthritis and back problems), wound healing, and the treatment of systemic diseases such as kidney disease, diabetes, and Cushing’s.
Acupuncture appointments are usually much different from the routine veterinary appointments that you may be used to. The goal is to keep your dog or cat as calm as possible, and make the appointment as enjoyable as possible. It can be helpful to bring a blanket or bed that your pet is familiar with, to help him relax, as well as treats or a special food that he enjoys. We also may turn down the lights to decrease distractions.
In many cases the best results may be achieved through the combination of acupuncture and other therapies such as herbal medicine, western prescription medications, dietary change, massage, and even surgery. We can discuss the options during your visits and adjust the plan for your individual pet as needed. |
